Abstract

Leila Slimani is an outstanding contemporary Moroccan-French female writer and a rising star in French literary circles. Chanson Douce is her second novel, which received rave reviews after its publication and therefore won the 2016 Goncourt Prize for Literature in France. This novel narrates a tragic story of a middle-class French couple who hired a nanny and constantly had small and trivial conflicts with her in their daily life, which has led to the nanny’s nervous breakdown, the failed suicide of the nanny and the murder of two children of the couple. This tragedy reflects the complicated social problems in contemporary France. In this work, with her cold, incisive, sharp writing style, the author directly shows the various difficulties and obstacles, such as class gap, spatial violence, sexism, etc, faced by a certain group in French society—the nanny. Through method of close reading of the text, this article will analyze the language style and plot setting of Chanson Douce, reveal the author's concept of death, and explore root of the tragic incident of “Nanny Killing Children” from a social perspective, in order to reveal the practical significance of this novel on our perspective on the problem of class cap in the current French society.
