The Nexus Between Environmental Quality and Agricultural Sector Performance: Evidence from Cameroon

Abstract: There is the growing belief that uncontrolled agricultural activities greatly reduce the quality of the environment wherein they are carried out, and in turn, this environmental degradation negatively affects agricultural sector performance as a whole. It is on the strength of this assertion that this paper examines the relationships between environmental quality (carbon dioxide emission) and agricultural sector performance (ASP) in Cameroon using the Vector Autoregressive modelling approach. Specifically, the paper attempts to determine whether environmental quality affects ASP or there is a reverse causation. Using time series data obtained from the 2018 version of the World Development Indicators from 1981 to 2016, the study reveals a negative and significant effect of the first lag of ASP on its current value while the first lag of environmental quality equally has a negative and significant influence on its current value in Cameroon over the study period. Further, there is a negative and significant effect of ASP on environmental degradation. The granger causality test shows that there is a bidirectional relationship between environmental quality and ASP in Cameroon. Finally agricultural labour negatively and significantly affects environmental degradation in Cameroon. From the findings of this study, it is recommended that the government should put in place policies that will promote agricultural produce transformation as well as preservation strategies. Also, farmers should practice farm fragmentation so as to reduce the chances of all the crops ripening at the same time. Afforestation policies should be fully implemented and agricultural development, extension and value chain strategies should be put in place. Restrictions and sanctions should be placed on initiators of bush fire and poor farming practices such as shifting cultivation and bush fallowing methods should be discouraged in favour of intensive farming through sensitization by agricultural extension services.

Abstract: The importance of fire since its discovery has been to provide heat, light, warmth and cooking of food. Increasingly, human population has tasked the resources for making fire through both the traditional and modern processes. However the traditional sources especially among people from developing nations have created social and economic effects. This study assesses wood fuel utilization in Niger State, Nigeria, including the amount consumed, influential factors of consumption and socio-economic effects. The study utilized a mixed method approach to data collection and questionnaire was distributed to 384 household heads that were sampled in the study. Only 20 among the sample were interviewed. The result revealed among others that household size, income, and availability of sources affect consumption while socio-economic impact includes: scarcity of wood fuel resources, increasing distance for wood collection and health hazards. One of the recommendations is that there should be general economic development particularly in urban areas which brings income growth, in order to trigger fuel switching and in variably reduce over dependence on wood fuel sources.

Abstract: The study examine the impact of corona virus outbreak on the Nigerian economy using reports from Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and World Health organization for the period of 11th March to 19th March 2020 on total cases of the virus in Nigeria. According to the WHO, the virus has infected about 76,936 people in the mainland China, with additional 2,051 cases of the virus from about 30 other countries and in Nigeria there are total of 91 people been screened for COViD-19 (22 new) in 13 state (Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, FCT, Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Yobe, Katsina, Akwa Ibom, Nasarawa and Ondo) out of which 63 tested negative and have been ruled out, result is pending for 17, while 11 were confirmed positive. Base on the reported cases of the disease, the researchers therefore recommend that precautionary measures that include Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water, and use hand sanitizer, maintain at least one and half metres distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing, persons with persistent cough or sneezing should stay home or keep a social distance, but not mix in crowd and making sure you and people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene, meaning cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or into your sleeve at the bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze and then dispose of the used tissue immediately among others should be taken in consideration.
