Abstract: A cross sectional study was conducted from December, 2016 to June, 2016 in and around Gambela town to identify different tick species infesting cattle, and host related risk factors for infestation. Adult ticks were collected from 286 cows and both physicaland microscopical examination were performed. Host related risk factors such as age, sex and body conditions were also investigated. The encountered identified tick species were Ambylommavariegatum, Boophilusdecoloratus, Hyalomma Marginatum, Rhipicephalusevertsievertsi, Rhipicephaluspreaxtatus and Hyalommatruncatum in descending order of prevalence. A. variegatum was the most prevalent (97.55%), while H. truncatum were the least abundant (0.35%) with sex prevalence twards female except A. variegatum in which both male and female equally infested. But only H.Marginatum (p < 0.05) and B. decoloratus (p < 0.05) were significantly associated with sex categories of cattle. Although, the association was not statistically significant (p > 0.05), the proportion of tick infestation was higher in adult animals inthe study area. All of tick species, except H. truncatum and R. preaxtatus, were significantly associated with poor body condition of animal (P < 0.05). Overall, the present study revealed high prevalence of tick infestation that could potentially hamper the productivity of cattle in the study area, hence a serious measure should be put in place to control and reduce the adverse effect of tick infestation.

Abstract: Ectoparasites infestation is one of the major veterinary problems affecting livestock industries in Nigeria. A survey of tick infestation was carried out on cattle reared in three popular cattle markets in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. 1959 ticks were recovered from the 142 cattle examined. Types of ticks found were Boophilus decoloratus 66(3.4%), Amblyomma variegatum 1090(55.6%), Hyalomma spp 8(0.4%) and Boophilus microplus 795(40.6%). The infestation of ticks in North bank cattle market was highest 870(44.4%) compared to Wadata market 838(42.8%) and Oracle farm 251(12.8%). Hyalomma species was recorded as the least abundant. There was no observed significant difference (P > 0.05) in the rate of infestation according to sex of the cattle. The high prevalence of tick infestation recorded in this research has serious economic implication as it has the potential of inflicting pathological effect on both cattle and humans. There is the need to create awareness among livestock owners on the effects of tick infestation and the need to improve animal health extension services in Nigeria.

Abstract: An investigation of ectoparasites of some livestock sold in Wadata Market, Makurdi, Nigeria was conducted between August and October, 2014. Sixty (60) cattle, sheep, goat and poultry were examined. Visual screening, handpicking, use of forceps and brushing methods were employed and specific points were the ectoparasites were removed were noted. A total of 1,832 ectoparasites were recovered from the 240 livestock. Ticks had the highest prevalence of 1576(86%) followed by lice 134(7.3%) and fleas 122(6.7%). Mixed infestation was observed in all the livestock species examined. With respect to the sex the prevalence rate was not significantly different (P>0.05). The ectoparasites preferred the abdomen in cattle, sheep and goat while in poultry they preferred the wings. Further research to assess the impact of these parasites on the health and production performance of the free-range domestic animals are strongly recommended.

Abstract: The bio-efficacy of chlorantraniliprole, quinolphos, lamda cyhalothrin, diflubenzuron, endosulfan, triazophos and indoxacarb were evaluated against tobacco leaf eating caterpillar Spodoptera litura infesting soybean. The soybean was sprayed twice with respective insecticides at 10 days interval starting from 35 days after germination. The experimental studies revealed that, the larval population of leaf eating caterpillar was significantly reduced by the treatment of quinolphos 25 EC @ 1000 ml.ha-1 followed by endosulfan 35 EC @ 1000 ml.ha-1 and lambda cyhalothrin 5 EC @ 300 ml.ha-1, which were at par with each other. Highest yield was recorded with the treatment of lambda cyhalothrin 5 EC @ 300 ml ha-1 (2500 kg.ha-1) followed by triazophos 40 EC @ 800 ml.ha-1 (2451 kg.ha-1), diflubenzuron 25 WP @ 400 g.ha-1 (2400 kg.ha-1).

Abstract: Sipha (Rugsia) maydis (Pass.) is an important pest of wheat and it has been reported throughout the Mediterranean region, into Central and South Asia, South Africa, South America and North America The development, survivorship, and life table parameters of R. padi were evaluated in a growth chamber on seven wheat cultivars as follows: ACA 315, Baguette 12 P, BioINTA 1002, BioINTA 2004, Buck Meteoro, Klein Yarará and LE 2330 at controlled conditions (20±1°C; about 70% RH; 14 h photophase). The development time of immature stage was ca. 8-9 d on cv. ACA 315, BioINTA 1002, Buck Meteoro, Klein Yarará and LE 2330, while those on cvs BioINTA 2004 and Baguette 12 P was ca. 11-12 d. The immature survival ranged from 90 to 100%. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) for ACA 315 and BioINTA 2004 were the highest. Jackknife estimates of rm on all cultivars ranged from 0.199 to 0.093 females/female/day on ACA 315 and LE 2330, respectively. The mean generation times (T) ranged from 22.82 d on Baguette 12 P to 15.09 d on Klein Yarará. The highest net reproductive rate (R0) were on ACA 315 and Baguette 12 P (59.80 and 53.25 females/female/generation, respectively). Because of the high coefficient of determination (pseudo-R2) values in Gompertz and Weibull models, survival data from different cultivars had a good fit to both models. The results pointed LE 2330, Klein Yarará and partially BioINTA 1002 as the least suitable host plants, indicating that they were the most resistant to S. maydis among the cultivars tested.
