Abstract

Huineng had constructed Zen’s thought system of heart-mind theory with Chinese cultural characteristics, which takes Xin(mind) as the center. Zen’s heart-mind theory founded by Huineng, not only prove up the fundamental and the core of Buddhism, but also agreed with and echoed the Chinese cultural psychology, fited to the needs of Chinese national psychology, Embedded in the depth of Chinese culture, became an important part of China's excellent traditional culture. The Chinese culture after Sui and Tang dynasties, such as Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, all were influenced by Huineng’s heart-mind theory. Neo-Confucianism of Song and Ming dynasties is certainly no exception. Huineng’ Zen had great effect on both forming and growing of Neo-Confucianism of the Song and Ming periods. In some ways, Neo-Confucianism comes from Zen, the formation and development of Neo-Confucianism is the development of Zen culture, Neo-confucianism is the expression of Zen Buddhism. Wang Yangming's philosophy directly inherited the Zen thought of the Sixth Patriarch——Huineng, was the Confucian transformation of Huineng’s heart-mind theory of Zen, therefore, both of them have a lot in common. Their most fundamental similarity is that they all insist on taking Xin(mind) as “noumenon” and the core of the ideological system. However, Yangming’s philosophy adhered to the fundamental position and ultimate goal of Confucianism, which ultimate goal of Yangming’s Xinxue is to fulfill the social responsibility or mission of Confucianism, which is “to unify the family, to govern the country, to pacify the world”.
