Introduction
There are natural polymers (wool, silk, natural rubber, cellulose, etc.) and synthetic polymers. The synthetic polymers includes synthetic rubber, phenol formaldehyde resin (Bakelite), neoprene, nylon, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), silicone and many others. All biological macromolecules are composed in large part of polymeric components. Insulating materials can be divided into simple polymers, composites and copolymers. Practically, there is no area without polymeric substances: daily life, industries, agriculture, construction, computers, automobiles, aerospace, medicine, biology. Polymers for cables, including power cables, transformers, insulators and rotating machines consist in thermoplastics such as PVC, PE, PET (polyethylene terephthalat), PPS(Poly p-phenylene sulfide), elastomers such as silicone, rubbers as EPR(ethylene-propylene copolymer) and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer M class) and thermosets such as epoxy. GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear), rotating machines and insulators comprise epoxy/glass, epoxy/silica/alumina and epoxy/mica systems.

Polymers, polymer-based products and finished products age and degrade over time, under the influence of one or more environmental factors (heat, light, electrical and mechanical stresses, humidity, chemicals, nuclear radiations, galvanic action). Aging processes are complicated in general, and take place under simultaneous multiple stresses.

Failure of polymer components can cause serious accidents, fire in the case of cracked and degraded polymer, accidents involving medical devices, many serious problems in domestic properties and in industrial engine compartment.

This special issue is to improve the dissemination of advanced research in the area of solid polymers, copolymers and composite with polymers used as electrical insulating materials in a wide variety of electrical installations. Original research papers are solicited in any aspect of the applications listed above.

Aims and Scope:

1. Conduction of solid dielectrics;
2. Polarization and breakdown of solid dielectrics;
3. Space charge and related effects;
4. Aging , degradation and failure;
5. Materials and insulation systems;
6. Multifunctional materials;
7. Application of spectroscopy including THz;
8. Composite insulation systems;
9. Nondestructive experimental methods.
