Introduction
The increase in elderly people worldwide is a problem and a challenge for the sciences. From the social sciences to the health sciences, aging is a research focus that requires innovative contributions.

Innovative contributions in the research proposals made in the elderly can contribute to expand a culture of interest towards aging. These contributions can be conceptual, theoretical, innovations for practice; all focused on aging and old age as a stage of life.

Medicine, psychology, nursing, rehabilitation and other sciences have looked at aging, have laid the foundations for a future development of research from their own disciplinary components and have brought multiple knowledge to this stage of life.

This special issue on Innovation in geriatric and gerontological research aims to focus advances in health sciences research towards the elderly. Its variability in relation to geriatric and gerontological research will allow to increase the body of knowledge of aging.
