Introduction
The availability of an affordable and sustainable energy supply across the African continent is an essential element in improving the living conditions of people and for sustaining economic development. The special issue is dedicated to answering some of the fundamental questions in how power networks or power supply systems may be used to mitigate some energy problems in Africa. What external and internal events affect the stability and reliability of the networks their capacity of supply the load needed at any time? What are the costs of interruptions for the utility customers and the economy as a whole? How should networks be sized to meet the requirements of the customers affecting the costs of power supply? What planning and design approaches can be used to obtain optimum arrangements not just in the cities but also for the not-yet-electrified communities in rural areas of sub Saharan Africa and other parts of Africa? How can the entire system be managed in terms of tariffs condition monitoring asset replacement and in many other aspects to make the supply the most economical possible in a changing world?

1. Electricity distribution system planning
2. Customer load modeling and analysis
3. Rural electrification technologies
4. Concentrated solar power system
5. Renewable energy technologies
6. Power system analysis and design
7. Demand side management for domestic consumers
