About This Special Issue
Metabolic disorders are responsible for many non-communicable diseases that are debilitating. It can be an underlying factor for a more dangerous health issues like, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, some types of cancer and consequently premature death. Metabolic disorders can be inherited or from predisposition to some environmental or social factors, lifestyle etc. Inherited metabolic disorder can occur as a result of gene anomaly, mostly autosomal recessive. This in most cases is as a result of a defect in a single gene that code for enzyme that activates the conversion of one substance to another eg. Disorders of carbohydrate metabolism (G6PD deficiency, glycogen storage disease etc), amino acid metabolism (phenylketonuria, glutaric acidemia type 1), organic acid metabolism (Alkaptonuria), fatty acid metabolism (medium chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency). However, non -inherited can be as a result of abnormal chemical reactions in the body that alter the normal metabolic process leading to imbalance of hormones and other chemical substances. Metabolic disorders can aggregate resulting in metabolic syndrome with resultant increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, premature aging and premature death.
This issue will accept any article that covers all forms of investigation on metabolic disorder, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, thyroid disorders, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, metabolic enzymes deficiency and dysfunction etc.
