Introduction
Evidence Based Nursing (EBN) is one approach that may enable future healthcare providers to manage the explosion of new literature and technology to improve patient outcomes. EBN is the process by which nurses make clinical decisions using the best available research evidence, their clinical expertise and patient preferences. Goals of EBN are to apply valid and reliable nursing research to clinical practice, bring the most current knowledge to clinicians, and deliver to patients the best available care. Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is an approach that enables clinicians to provide the highest quality of care in meeting the multifaceted needs of their patients and families. It involves an ability to access, summarize, and apply information from the literature to-day clinical problems. EBP in nursing enrich their clinical training and experience with up to date research, search for assess, and apply the literature to their clinical situations. To carry out EBN several factors are important such as; sufficient research must have been published on the specific topic, the nurse must have skill in accessing and critically analyzing research, and the nurse's practice must allow her/him to implement change based on EBN. Steps of EBP are ask the burning clinical question(PICO format), collect the most relevant and best evidence, critically appraise the evidence, integrate all evidence with one’s clinical expertise, patient preferences and values in making a practice decision or change and evaluate the practice decision or change. Barriers to EBP are lack of knowledge regarding EBP strategies, negative views about research and evidence based care, lack of belief that EBP will result in more positive outcomes than traditional care, lack of time and resources to search for and appraise evidence, overwhelming client loads, organizational constraints such as lack of administrative support or incentives. Additionally, demands from clients for a certain type of treatment (client who demand antibiotics for their viral upper respiratory infections when they are not indicated), peer pressure to continue with tradition practices, and inadequate content and behavior skills regarding EBP in educational program.
