The chemistry of heteroaromatic compounds is an immense discipline, covering approximately two centuries of research. Heterocyclic compounds have attracted much attention due to their wide applications in medicinal chemistry research. The synthesis of heterocyclic compounds has become an inevitable part of organic and synthetic chemistry due to their presence in bioactive compounds, but new developments in the synthetic methods are also constantly growing.
Heterocycles are a highly significant class of compounds containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur atoms. They are classified based on the number and position of these atoms, leading to five-membered heterocyclic compounds like furan, imidazole, indoles, oxazoles, pyrazoles, pyrroles, tetrazoles, thiazoles, thiazolidinones, and triazoles, as well as six-membered heterocyclic compounds such as coumarins, pyridines, pyrimidines, quinazolines, and many others. These compounds have garnered substantial attention in medicinal chemistry research due to their broad synthetic utility as intermediates, chiral auxiliaries, metal ligands in asymmetric catalysts, organic catalysts, and protecting groups in organic synthesis. Additionally, heterocycles are abundant in nature and find widespread applications in organic, inorganic, agrochemicals, catalysis, coordination chemistry, pharmaceutical, and medicinal chemistry. They are integral components of various drugs, biomolecules, vitamins, hormones, and biologically active compounds, exhibiting diverse properties such as antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral, herbicidal, and insecticidal activities.
