Comparisons of Teaching and Living Environment Monitoring Results Between Public and Private Schools in Luohu District in 2005-2018

Abstract

Objective To survey the hygiene condition of teaching and living environment of public and private primary and secondary schools in Luohu District of Shenzhen, and to compare the differences between public and private schools, so as to provide scientific reference for further improvement of school health environment. Methods During 2005-2018, 82 schools in Luohu District of Shenzhen City were monitored according to School Health Work Regulations and Comprehensive Evaluation of School Health GB/T 18205-2012, including 60 public schools and 22 private schools. Results 2976 classrooms, 457 libraries and 63 gymnasiums were monitored during 2005-2018. Among them, the qualified rate of average classroom area per capita, distance between blackboard and front desk, desk and chair configuration, blackboard reflection ratio, back wall reflection ratio, blackboard surface illumination, environmental noise in all schools were relatively low. There are significant differences between public schools and private schools in classroom per capita area, distance between blackboard and front desk, desk and chair configuration, blackboard size, window-to-floor ratio, back wall reflection ratio, classroom lighting, and environmental noise and toilet hygiene indicators. Conclusion There are some shortcomings in classroom sanitation and toilet allocation in schools of Luohu District, and they perform well in public places and dormitories. There are significant differences in the health environment between public and private schools in many aspects, especially in the classroom health environment. Comparatively, the teaching and living environment of public schools is better than that of private schools.
