Mentor Wasn’t Always Available: Challenges of Pre-Service Teachers on Supported Teaching in Schools

Abstract: The goal of the study was to identify the difficulties that pre-service teachers encountered while participating in supported teaching in schools. Using a phenomenology design, the study utilized a qualitative approach. Convenience sampling technique was used to sample twenty (20) level 100 pre-service teachers (12 males and 8 females) who were enrolled in a bachelor of education program. Data was gathered through extensive, semi-structured interviews. The majority of the challenges encountered by student-teachers were related to the attitude of the mentors such as mentor absenteeism, mentor lateness, mentor inability to provide student-teachers with necessary information they needed, mentor inability to assist student-teachers, and mentor’s lack of devotion for student-teachers. The partner school related challenges identified were: lack of mentors, inadequate curricular materials, inadequate teaching and learning materials, inadequate textbooks, and inadequate furniture in some schools. It was found that majority of mentors in the partner schools had little knowledge of what supported teaching in schools entailed. Thus the mentors found it challenging to give student-teachers the support and direction they needed. In many instances, mentors were unfamiliar with the new Bachelor of Education Curriculum, which made it challenging for them to offer effective and knowledgeable mentorship. Some college tutors did not provide student-teachers with enough assistance through reflection.

Multi-Draft Instructional Method as Predictor on Polytechnic Students’ Report Writing Performance in North-Central, Nigeria

Abstract: This study examined the of multi-draft instructional method on polytechnic students’ report writing performance in North-central, Nigeria. The objectives of this study were to examine the: (i) general performance of polytechnic students’ in report writing; (ii) effects of Multi-Draft Instructional Method (MDIM) on polytechnic students’ performance in report writing; and, (iii) influence of gender. Two-groups, pre-test, post-test, quasi-experimental design were adopted for this study. The population consisted of all Higher National Diploma I in Kwara and Bida Polytechnics. Two departments were sampled using multi-stage sampling technique. The sample was categorised into one experimental group and one control group. A total number of 100 polytechnic students (NDII) were sampled. Report Writing Performance Test (RWPT) was used to collect data from the respondents. The test items were adapted from English language and Communication texts and validated by language experts. The reliability of the instrument was carried out through test re-test method in an interval of two weeks and a reliability index of 0.72 was obtained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The data were analysed using the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that: (i) the general performance of polytechnic students in report writing (in both groups) was low before the treatment but high after the treatment; (ii) that multi-draft instructional method significantly predict polytechnic students’ report writing performance; (iii) that there is no significant effect of multi-draft instructional method on polytechnic students’ report writing performance on the bases of gender. The study concluded that both MDIM add value to students’ report writing performance. The implication is that these two methods have significant effects on polytechnic students’ technical report writing performance. The study recommended that teachers should employ the use of MDIM instructional method for teaching report writing to enhance students’ writing performance.

Abstract: The research investigated the effects of Model teaching methods on students’ attitude and academic performance in essay writing among secondary school students in Ekiti State. It also determined whether gender and school location could influence students’ performance in essay writing. The study used quasi experimental design using pre-test, post-test one experimental group and a control group. The population for the study was 16,266 Senior Secondary School students while the sample consisted of 103 SS2 students from two schools which were selected through multi stage sampling technique from the one Senatorial District of Ekiti state. Two instruments were used to pilot the study performance test which was used to determine the proficiency level of the students in essay writing before and after treatment and a questionnaire on students’ attitude to essay writing before and after treatment. Face and content validity of the instruments were ensured. The reliability of the questionnaire on the attitude of students towards essay writing was estimated using Cronbach-Alpha reliability method with a reliability coefficient of 0.80. The reliability coefficient of the Essay writing performance test was estimated using test-re-test reliability method. Pearson product moment correlation statistics was used to obtain a reliability coefficient of 0.92. Three research questions and four null hypotheses were postulated to pilot the study. The study showed that the performance of students in essay writing before treatment was below average level. The result revealed that there was a significant difference in the performance of means scores of students in essay writing in experimental group than those in the control group.

Abstract: This is a qualitative study with an exploratory scope since it wanted to examine a little-studied research topic on the teaching and learning of English. Its objective was to establish the relationship between the TPR (Total Physical Response) method and motivational and metacognitive development in seventh grade students in the English area from three basic education institutions in the rural and urban sectors in Colombia. With the particularity that all the students participating in the study stated that they had had unpleasant experiences with English in their academic environments. For this, an intentional non-probabilistic sample was used, since in these groups there was evidence of greater difficulty in using and learning the second language, greater fear when expressing themselves orally and interacting with others. A survey was applied to this population as an instrument, through which it was possible to know the effectiveness of the TPR method for meaningful learning of English. As analysis methodology, description and comparison were used. An Excel matrix was produced; structured, categorized and detailed with specific objectives, categories, subcategories and finds, which showed how to compare and analyze each data obtained and thus see the results clearly. In conclusion, it can be stated that the results showed that the method raised interest and motivation, pursuing a significant learning of English, in an autonomous and self-regulated way, and at the same time facilitating the active participation of the student.

Abstract: The need for an ideal teacher in this present age is crucial and of utmost importance. Teaching is one of the most lucrative jobs in the world, because education is the bedrock of other occupations. The functions and significance of teachers cannot be estimated in this present age. Teachers are paramount and influential agents in the global world today; The different stages of teaching has to be implemented with every form of seriousness, because of the changing world we are living in, of which the education sector is not left out. Certain stages and practices is expected of an ideal teacher, there has to be a developments age which will migrate the teacher from the pre-service (caterpillar stage) to in service (butterfly stages), to that effect the student teachers in education field should be taught right from their early stage before they graduate from the school system. Every potential teacher should have gone through these stages of development in education to become an n-service teacher, there are also prescribed standards expected to be followed and skills to be acquired and this paper gives the need for student teaching practice to be looked into, more emphasized and highly recommendable for all aspiring teachers and those who have flair for teaching.

Abstract: Complete or incomplete adoption of technological innovations is of vital importance to its adopters or users. The adoption can change the entire educational system and its units (Pupils/students, method of delivery and teachers). The research objectives are to: explore the consequences of technological innovation on the implementation of the 9-3-4 educational policy on the students of the 9-3-4 educational system in Ado local government area of Ekiti State; describe the impact of technological innovations provided by non-government sector, have on students of the 9-3-4 educational system in Ado local government area of Ekiti State and; identify the barriers relating to students’ adoption of technological innovation in Ado local government area of Ekiti State. The research design used was a descriptive survey study. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted to sample out two higher institutions and three secondary schools. The population of the study include the students of the 9-3-4 educational system. The instrument was administered to three hundred and fifty respondents. Multiple regression was used to test the hypothetical statement; descriptive analysis was deployed to analyze the data collected. The study concluded that there are more female students than males by gender in the schools. Technological innovations have influenced the students of the 9-3-4 educational system to a greater extent. The provided technological innovations by the non-governmental sector have positively impacted the students of the 9-3-4 educational system. It was recommended that the use and donation of technological innovations should be encouraged and used in the school system. It appeals to well-meaning Nigerians to help in the purchase and ensure even distribution of such to the different cadres of the schooling system. The various stakeholders should be orientated and re-orientated about the need to fully adopt technological innovations.

Abstract: Over the years, social media has become an active technological tool in Nigeria. It is a news and communication channel that has made dissemination of information easy, with a snap of the finger on cellphones for her citizenry; especially among the technologically savvy youths. This paper investigated the influence of social media usage on the choice of career among students of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo. It also discussed its implications on instructional media design / production, communication; school guidance and counselling. The paper adopted the use of descriptive survey research design approach. One hundred and fifty (150) questionnaires (37 online and 113 manual) of sixteen (16) items, were used to collect data from students across the nine (9) faculties in the citadel of learning. Data was analyzed using SPSS App / Percentages. Findings from the study revealed that students’ subscribed to the efficacy of social media on their studies (75.9%) than for fun (24.1%). It also revealed that students’ confessed social media as the major influence of their chosen carrier (67.2%), while 32.8% disagreed. The study therefore concluded that the irresistible usage of social media among students (youth) has significantly contributed to their academic development.
