Identification of Rugose Spiralling Whitefly Infesting Host Plants in Bangladesh and Assessment of Its Damage Severity

Abstract: The rugose spiraling whitefly (RSW), Aleurodicus rugioperculatus (Aleyrodiade: Hemiptera) is an invasive insect pest and it was first identified in Bangladesh in 2019 on coconut plants. A baseline survey study was conducted in Bangladesh to identify the RSW-infesting geographical locations, host plants as well as to assess the damage severity. The duration of the survey period was 8 months from May to December 2021. Based on our survey results, we report that RSW has invaded all over Bangladesh with low to very severe infestation level. The highest infestation was noticed in west, south-west and north-east regions while comparatively lower infestation was found in south, south-eastern and central part of the country. It was evident from this study that both border and non-border districts were affected almost equally by this insect pest. During the survey period, sixty onehost plants were identified throughout country where 49.18% werefruit plant species, 21.31% ornamentals and flowers, 8.19% field crops, 8.19% forests and 13.13% other species. Among the host plants, very severe infestation was noticed on coconut where 85.72% native and 81.23% dwarf coconut plants were found to be infested by RSW. Results also showed that comparatively lower leaflet infestation, low leaf area encrustation by sooty mould fungus and low abundances of adult RSW were found in dwarf coconut plants than that of native. After coconut, next infestation severity was observed on banana (low to severe) and guava (low to medium) although the extent of damage varied from district to districts. On the other hand, low infestation was found on the rest of the host plants under different plant groups viz. forests, ornamentals, flowers, field crops, cash crops etc.

Description of the Larva of Oxyallagma dissidens (Selys, 1876) (Odonata: Coenagriidae, Ischnurinae)

Abstract: Oxyallagma dissidens is a species of high elevations 2600-2700m in Ecuador and Peru. The larva of Oxyallagma dissidens was hitherto unknown. Based on exuviae of reared specimens, the final instar larva of Oxyallagma dissidens is described. Exuviae of Oxyallagma dissidens have two parallel rows of dark spots on the dorsum of the abdomen, the prementum has 5-6 setae and the labial palps 6 setae. Antenna 7-segmented, distal margin of labial palp with four crenulations and a large spine. Head brownish and between the eyes at the front with a light band with three loops to behind. Pterothorax with parallel stripes on the wing bags at the inner side. Metathoracic femur length 2.75 mm. All femora with four darker edges with fine spines. Abdominal dorsum with fine punctuations and with a darker brownish distal half. Oxyallagma dissidens has a comparable strong armation on the femurs. The gill lamellae have a medial broad dark brown vein, with several veins at all sides to the border of gills. In one case a description on Oxyallagma dissidens was not given, but a figure was published. Oxyallagma dissidens was mentioned from Peru (Quito, La Granadilla) and from Ecuador (Lago San Pablo, Campos of Guayaquil). Oxyallagma dissidens is the recent name in contrast to the alternative name runtuni. Bota-Sierra and Andrés described Oxyallagma colombianum as new species of the genus from Colombia.

Abstract: In West Africa, natural environments are strongly impacted by climatic crises such as those of the 70’s and 80’s but also by anthropogenic factors. The objective of this study was to update the knowledge about the entomological resources in the upper Senegal River basin in Mali. The captures took place in the Kayes region from June 2020 to May 2021 along streams, in fallows and fields over a distance of 100 to 200 m from the banks and in water at a depth of 0.5 to 1 m. Five trapping techniques were used (Swath net, fruit fly trap, buried trap, light trap and dip net). Captured insects were emptied into vials containing 70% alcohol, or kept in layers of cotton or newspaper. The study identified 23 orders, 108 families, 253 genus and 311 species for a total of 8797 individuals. The major orders frequently encountered were Coleoptera and Diptera. The species diversity H' ranged from 1.28 to 1.78 bits. This study contributes to a better knowledge of the entomological resources of the upper Senegal River basin in Mali. These results will enable the adoption of effective control measures for pests of tropical perennial crops. This work recommends that monitoring be implemented to document population dynamics.

Abstract: In this laboratory study, three chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSIs) viz. Tacoma 40SC (Buprofezin), Heron 5EC (Lufenuron) and Pyrifen 10.8EC (Pyriproxifen) were evaluated with three concentrations of each through different application methods viz. direct or topical, indirect or leaf-dip and combined (Direct + Indirect). Data on jassids mortality was collected at 3 and 7 days after treatment (DAT) application. Our present study showed that all of the CSIs had significant effect on the mortality of jassid. In all cases, mortality was clearly dose, time and application method dependent. It has been seen that higher concentrations were found to be more effective than lower concentrations. Moreover, significant level of mortality was found at 3DAT but reached to the peak level at 7DAT in case of all selected CSIs. Bioassay study has showed that all the selected CSIs became able to enter the insect body through contact as well as stomach action to disrupt moulting process by inhibiting chitin synthesis that confirmed the contact and systemic actions of the selected CSIs. Moreover, protocols developed in this study for jassids collection and their safe transferring inside the petridishes would be a useful and convenient approach for the researchers.
