This presentation is based on an in-depth analysis of Portugal’s health and public health policies between 2000 and 2014, with a focus on the development and implementation of quality and safety strategies. In preparing this article, bibliographic sources were used to search for evidence to assess the evolution of public policies between 2000 and 2014. A comparative analysis of the selected articles led to the collection of bibliographic references presented, based on the evaluation and analysis of their respective contents, to be included in this article. The study highlights the evolution of policies amid challenges such as fragmentation of responsibilities, organizational reforms, and the establishment of key entities like the Department of Quality in Health and the National Strategy for Quality in Health (2009-2014). It emphasizes the importance of continuous policy adaptation and coordination to ensure sustainable improvements in healthcare quality and safety. Drawing lessons from Portugal’s experience, the session aims to contribute to the global discourse on effective health policy frameworks that promote patient safety and high-quality care in diverse healthcare systems.
