Abstract: Linseed (Linumusitatissimum L.) has been a traditional crop and it is the most important oil seed crop in production in the higher altitudes of Ethiopia. The needs for applying fertilizers are becoming obvious, as soil fertility has declined from time to time. Excessive use of fertilizers also affects farmers’ economy, as the crop is relatively low yielder. In order to study the effect NPS blended fertilizer levels the experiment was conducted at two locations in Bale, south eastern Ethiopia (Sinana on farm and Agarfa) to study effects of different levels on linseed performance for two consecutive years (2021-2022/23). The treatments were six rates of blended NPS fertilizer (0, 25, 50, and 75,100, and 125 NPS kg ha-1) laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Linseed variety ‘Hora soba’ was used as a test crop. The main effect of blended NPS levels did not reveal significant differences for the most of studied parameters at both studied locations. This might be due to medium to high soil nutrient status of the study sites. The instability of responses to application of fertilizer to this crop at Bale requires soil test based recommendation as this varied on a farm-to-farm basis.

Abstract: Tef (Eragrostis tef) is one of a crucial cereal crop for smallholder farmers in Ethiopia, providing essential food and nutrition security. Nonetheless, the productivity of tef grain is relatively low (1.94 tha-1), resulting from the limited access to improved varieties by farmers and low adoption of recommended management practices. Hence, this activity was conducted to demonstrate and create awareness of improved tef varieties along with their management practices in six selected potential districts namely, Adea, Lume and Gimbichu districts of East Shewa zone, Gelan and Akaki Kality districts of Sheger city administration and Becho districts of South West Shewa zone of Oromia region. Bishoftu, the newly released variety, was demonstrated along with the standard checks (Eba and Dagim) varieties and the farmers practice during the 2022/23 main planting season. Yield data was collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics, while farmers’ preference and feedback were evaluated using direct ranking and narration methods, respectively. The highest grain yield (25.5 qha–1) was obtained from Bishoftu variety at Akaki kality district while the lowest mean grain yield (20.3 qha–1) was recorded from Eba variety at Adea district of East Shewa zones of Oromia region. A mean grain yield increment of 0.2% to 21.6% was recorded from Bishoftu variety over the standard check Eba variety in all the demonstration sites. Similarly, Bishoftu variety was selected first followed by Dagim and Eba varieties in Adea, Gimbichu and Lume districts while Dagim variety was selected first followed by Bishoftu and Eba variety in the Gelan district of Sheger city administration of Oromia region. Therefore, the selected varieties should be scaled up in the target areas and other similar agro-ecological areas by involving all the concerned stakeholders such as the government sectors, non-governmental organizations and other private sectors at different levels.

Abstract: The demonstrations of faba bean varieties were done in two consecutive years (2016/17 and 2017/18) with production packages in the Degem and Debre Libanos districts in the North Shewa zone of the Oromia region. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of improved varieties under farmers' field conditions in the study areas. The demonstration was done in 18 farmers’ fields using four improved varieties Tumsa and Gora for nitosol and Hachalu and Didia for vertisol with local varieties. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and present the collected data. Grain yield, farmers' performance scores, and feedback were taken from the demonstration sites. In the districts, the demonstration plot size followed was 100 m2 and a seeding rate of 250 kg ha-1. At planting, DAP fertilizer 100 kg ha-1 and biofertilizer 500 g ha-1 were applied. The result of the analysis showed that the improved varieties gave a higher yield than the local control variety. The average grain yield harvested in the Degem area showed that an improved variety of Gora and Tumsa improved variety offers 16.7 qt/ha and 15.7 qt/ha, respectively which is higher than the local variety that gave an average yield of 9.2 qt/ha. In the Debre Libanos district, the variety Hachalu and Didia also gave a mean yield of 22.4 and 23.3 qt/ha higher than the local 8.7 qt/ha. The yield advantage of the two improved varieties over local varieties was 1.67 and 1.57 qt/ha and 8.41 qt/ha for Nitosols and 13.7 and 14.6 qt/ha for Vertisols. The performance score result shows that variety Gora ranked first in terms of grain production, disease resistance, marketability, and seed size followed by Tumsa on nitosols and Hachalu followed by Didia on vertisols. Therefore, both the government and non-governmental organizations must support the research and dissemination of geographically adaptable varieties to smallholder farmers.

Abstract: Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most popular salad crops and occupies the largest production area among salad crops in the world. However, production of lettuce can be limited due to lack of improved varieties for different agro-ecologies. Adaptable high yielder released lettuce varieties were not identified for farmers of Fogera and Libokemkem districts in Northwestern Ethiopia. A field study was conducted at Fogera and Libokemkem districts in 2020 and 2021 to evaluate the yield and yield components of released lettuce varieties at rain fed condition. Two lettuce varieties were used as a treatment viz: RSK-3 and Tesfa. The treatments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The analysis of variance revealed that there was a highly significant difference (P<0.01) between locations on stand count, head diameter, leaf length, number of leaves per plant and fresh leaves yield of lettuce varieties. The highest yield was recorded from Tesfa variety at both locations. The higher leaf yield of Tesfa (34.15 ton/ha) and RSK-3(26.8ton/ha) was obtained at Libokemekem than Fogera district Tesfa (3.89ton/ha) and RSK-3(3.67ton/ha). Therefore, Tesfa variety of lettuce could be recommended for both Fogera and Libokemkem districts.

Proposal of the Theory of Anti-Lethargy of Small Farmers Based on the Analysis of Sustainable Governance Peru 2022

Abstract: This research aimed to examine the sustainable governance applicable to small organic agriculture in Peru by 2022. The qualitative methodology was employed in the case study, enabling the acquisition of concrete, contextual, and comprehensive knowledge regarding the environmental governance that Peru has been experiencing. The study subjects comprised 15 representatives of producer organizations from the coast, the Andes, and the Amazon, as well as 5 representatives of institutions associated with the agrarian and environmental governance of Peru. The semi-structured interview was conducted with them, complemented by a documentary analysis of the primary agricultural and environmental public policies. The results indicate an enormous gap in environmental governance between the three levels of government (national government, regional governments and municipalities) and between multisectors (the ministries dedicated to the themes are given: agrarian, environmental, social, and production) It has been concluded that there is no comprehensive vision for organic agriculture as an environmental sustainability strategy. The 'Theory of Anti-Lethargy of Small Farmers in the Face of Sustainable Governance' is proposed, which encompasses strategies to encourage agrarian participation, given that more than two million farmers are awaiting the government's intervention, i.e. citizens who have not comprehended the importance of being involved, active, and committed. This approach has the potential to generate economies of scale, enhance opportunities, and elevate living standards for the next generation.
