Abstract

Pidgin is a global linguistic phenomenon that is not specific to the appearance of one language over another but rather is linked to the availability of factors and circumstances that facilitate its emergence. At the forefront of these factors is communication between speakers who are not united by one language. To be able to communicate, they find the solution in pidgin, which enables each of them to express what is in himself in a simplified and concise manner One of the most critical problems in studying pidgin in Arabic is due to the scarcity of sources and references that address this linguistic phenomenon, which we have begun to use involuntarily, especially if we want to communicate with expatriates who do not speak Arabic well, so pidgin has become their means of communicating with Arabic speakers. After pointing out the first problem, which is the scarcity of sources and references, it is necessary to address the issue of defining this term and translating it from English to Arabic. Many translations and definitions differed significantly, which led some to apply the term "Ratana" to other linguistic levels that vary from "Ratana", which is the language of expatriates in Saudi Arabia. The research also discusses the theories presented by some Western researchers to understand the phenomenon of pidgin languages. The research aims to lay the theoretical foundations for studying pidgin, enabling researchers to explore this phenomenon in the field of linguistics from multiple angles. This includes examining pidgin through theories of second language learning and investigating its impact and influence in various environments, such as Arabic.
